Harmful Effects of Moisture in Your Basement

You’ve seen one or two signs of basement water issues but turn a blind eye because “the moisture issue is down there and won’t bother anyone.”

Even if any member of your household rarely goes down there, a damp basement is not harmless and should not be ignored.

Some of the harmful effects of moisture in your basement are:

Harmful germs

When bacteria from a respiratory illness become airborne, they find their way through the vents and ducts to the basement.

Thanks to the moist air, the bacteria get trapped and flourish in the damp, dark conditions, and your basement becomes a colony of disease-causing bacteria.

These germs don’t stay down. They find their way into the living areas through ducts, holes, and openings to infect other people.

Dust mites

Every home houses dust mites. But homes with extremely humid air have a high population of dust mites. Your dark basement, together with the moisture, makes for a perfect all-year-round home for mites.

These eight-legged creatures will flourish in the basement and, unfortunately, won’t stay there. Dust mites will find their way into other parts of the home, provoking allergies with symptoms such as sneezing, running nose, itchy nose, and the like.

If any household member has asthma, they may experience increased symptoms.

Mold

Mold thrives in dark and humid conditions, making your moist basement the perfect place.

Mold can cause shortness of breath, dry cough, sore throat, respiratory issues and other avoidable ailments.

In children, seniors, and people with low immunity, the presence of mold can lead to frequent visits to the hospital.

Structural damage

Basement moisture can wreak havoc on your home’s foundation. When water pools around the foundation for too long, the soil becomes soft, and the weight of your home causes it to sink.

This leads to cracks in the foundation. If not repaired, more water can squeeze its way through the cracks.

Rodents and other pests

A moist basement is an invitation to rodents, snakes, roaches and other pests. Only they won’t show up with gifts and won’t be good guests. Mice and rats travel around your home, scurrying on the floor and inside the cabinets in search of food.

They’ll chew on books and clothes and damage other property. Rodents will also leave their infected droppings behind, which can become airborne.

When you touch or inhale the droppings, you could contract diseases including hantavirus, Salmonellosis, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, and so on.
